The large volumes of foodwaste generated in these cities justify the required investment to build and operate a major foodwaste processing operation. Following trials conducted over a 12 month period, we have commissioned a dedicated 3ha facility (scaling up to 6.5ha in time) for trade and household foodwaste, with processing capacity for up to 40,000 tonnes per year.
Certified Food Destruction
Envirofert has recently built, in partnership with Fonterra, a secure food destruction facility at our Tuakau site. This facility is available to our clients to process food products wasted as a result of damaged packaging, contamination or time (end of shelf life). The food waste is processed under secure conditions, thereby giving our clients the confidence that it has been removed from the food chain. Our facility is also better for the environment as the alternative is to send this foodwaste to landfill or stock feed operators. Both these options have significant downsides:
- Landfills produce dangerous methane gas;
- There are contamination issues with stockfood operators accessing production sites; and
- Potential for stock shrinkage.

- Collection by an authorised vehicle.
- Secure handling at Envirofert's site.
- Mechanical, or manual, de ‐packing and destruction.
- Mixing of all organic product into our composting operation .
- Recycling of the packaging materials wherever possible.
- Certificates of destruction issued for each load processed.
